I am Jack Payne : a cognitive neuroscientist, musician, producer and photographer. Basically a one-man fully staffed creative agency. Currently based in the NYC area.

My primary role is as the CTO of KolAi Denim, LLC. I created the software at the heart of our AI-powered web platform. We empower denim manufacturers to massively increase their productivity using our web-based tool. It makes the denim laser design process 10x faster, by leveraging artificial intelligence to automate a core part of the denim laser design task. We currently have customers all over the world - to learn more, check out kolaidenim.com.

I also work freelance as a cognitive & data scientist with a number of clients. Currently I am back in the high fashion world, working closely with Kase Fenley of Phenotype as their director of neuroscience. It’s a really cool project, collecting brainwave data and using it to generate unique textures to put onto clothing.

I am a multi-instrumental musician and producer, with a history including world tours, basement shows, and bands in every genre from metal to mariachi. I play : bass, guitar, cello, piano, drums, synthesizers. I produce music for myself and others in my studio. I have a big lineup of songs coming out with many talented collaborators in NYC. I also love to create photo and video, using analog media as much as possible. I love the quirks and random imperfections of analog film.

In 2016, I completed a PhD program in the Cognitive Neuroscience of Music and Language at University of California, Irvine.  My dissertation was about the how music and language convey emotional information. I’ve since continued this work in the private sector, using my expertise to help brands tailor the emotional messaging of their stores to improve the customer experience. There are a lot of ways to leverage neuroscience to improve your business, including applying known principles and designing customized experiments to maximize performance capabilities.
